Algorithmic Amplification: ARC Report Raises Alarms Over Antisemitic Content on Instagram

March 26, 2026 By admin Leave a Comment

A new report from the Antisemitism Research Center (ARC) by the Center for Countering Digital Hate (CAM) paints a stark picture of how antisemitic content is not only present on Instagram, but actively distributed through the platform’s own recommendation systems. The findings, based on a concentrated 96-hour monitoring period, suggest that the issue extends beyond isolated posts or fringe accounts into the mechanics of how content is surfaced to users.

Researchers documented 100 antisemitic posts that were directly pushed to Instagram accounts via algorithmic recommendations. These posts collectively generated more than 5.3 million likes and 3.8 million shares, pointing to a level of engagement that significantly amplifies their visibility. The estimated reach—up to 280 million users—underscores how rapidly such content can spread once it is picked up by the platform’s distribution engine.

The report identifies consistent patterns in the material itself. Much of the content follows recognizable propaganda structures, including demonization, conspiracy framing, and narrative repetition designed to reinforce harmful stereotypes. What makes the findings particularly concerning is that this content is not simply hosted on the platform—it is being surfaced and promoted through automated recommendation systems, increasing the likelihood that users encounter it regardless of whether they actively seek it out.

Among the more troubling elements highlighted by ARC is the emergence of AI-generated personas designed to mimic religious authority. Researchers identified fabricated “rabbi” accounts that were used to disseminate antisemitic tropes while presenting themselves as credible voices. One such account reportedly amassed over 1.4 million followers, illustrating how quickly these synthetic identities can gain traction. Their design appears intentional, leveraging perceived authenticity to make the content more persuasive and more difficult for users to critically assess.

This combination of algorithmic amplification and synthetic authority introduces a new level of complexity to the challenge of moderating harmful content. It suggests that the spread of antisemitism on social platforms is no longer solely a matter of user behavior, but also of system design—how recommendation engines prioritize, rank, and distribute information at scale.

The ARC report ultimately raises broader questions about accountability in digital ecosystems where engagement-driven algorithms play a central role in shaping what users see. If harmful content is being amplified not just by users but by the platform’s own infrastructure, the implications extend beyond moderation policies to the underlying logic of content distribution itself.
